Minnesota is a state in the north of the United States, bordering Canada, and its nickname is “The North Star State.” Famous for having a great many lakes large and small, people often call this place the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” In the 50 States quarter series it was issued 32nd.
The reverse of the coin contains a loon floating on the water and people fishing from a boat, and the state outline is drawn together as well. Below are engraved the letters “Land of 10,000 Lakes.”
The loon is a bird that represents Minnesota, a bird that lives on clear lakes. The image of people fishing well shows how close the lakes and nature are to the lives of the people here. The everyday life of Minnesota, living together with the water, is contained on one face of the coin.
Minnesota became an official state of the United States on May 11, 1858, 32nd in order.
When you look at this coin, instead of a splendid event or figure, a single bird on a calm lake and a person fishing come to mind first. Minnesota, in effect, chose “a life together with the water” as its own point of pride.
