Arizona

Arizona is a state located in the arid desert region of the southwestern United States. Its nickname is “The Grand Canyon State,” because the Grand Canyon, one of the world’s most renowned great canyons, is in this very state.

The reverse of the coin depicts the majestic form of the Grand Canyon along with a saguaro cactus drawn large in the foreground. On the banner above is engraved the inscription “Grand Canyon State.”

The Grand Canyon is an enormous gorge carved into the land by river water over a long period of time, and its red rock walls, revealed layer upon layer, overwhelm the viewer. The saguaro cactus standing tall in front of it is a plant famous for its arm-spreading appearance and representative of the Arizona desert.

Arizona joined the U.S. Union as the 48th state on February 14, 1912. As one of the last states to make up the U.S. mainland, it is a state that joined relatively late.
