New Mexico
The "Land of Enchantment," engraved with the state's outline and the Zia sun symbol.
New Mexico is a state located in the southwestern United States, a place where deserts, mountains, and red earthy-toned scenery blend together. So much so that its nickname is the “Land of Enchantment,” its mysterious and beautiful nature and long-standing culture have captivated people.
The reverse of the coin renders the outline of the state of New Mexico with a three-dimensional feel, and on it is engraved the Zia sun symbol taken from the state flag. Below is included the inscription “Land of Enchantment.”
The Zia sun symbol is a simple yet powerful symbol in which four lines each extend outward in four directions from a single circle. Originating from the culture of the native peoples who have long lived in this region, it is widely used as a mark representing New Mexico’s identity.
New Mexico joined the U.S. Union as the 47th state on January 6, 1912. It is a place that became an official state relatively late, joining much later than many other American states.
This coin, which condenses and captures New Mexico’s individuality with just the shape of the state and a symbolic emblem, brings to mind the long-standing culture and nature imbued in this land. Looking at the coin, you can ponder the meaning of the nickname “Land of Enchantment.”
