Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
Devils Island with its sea caves and lighthouse, and a kayaker paddling before it.
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore protects the many islands and lakeshore scattered across Lake Superior in the state of Wisconsin. Islands with clear water, strange rocks, and dense forests gather together to form a beautiful landscape.
On the reverse of the coin are engraved ‘Devils Island,’ the sea caves carved by the waves, the Devils Island Lighthouse, and a person paddling a kayak before it. It is a lively scene in which nature and people blend together.
The sea caves, carved from the cliffs by the waves over long years, are a landmark of this island, and the lighthouse played the role of safely guiding ships crossing the rough lake. Touring the caves by kayak is a representative way of enjoying this place.
These islands and lakeshore were designated a nationally protected site on September 26, 1970, and have preserved their beauty to this day.
This coin from the ‘America the Beautiful’ series holds together the scenic beauty shaped by water and rock and the delight of people who traverse it.
