Juliette Gordon Low

Juliette Gordon Low (1860–1927) was the person who founded the Girl Scouts of the USA. In an era when girls had far fewer opportunities than now to learn, to have adventures, and to become leaders, she built with her own hands a sturdy shelter in which girls could grow up together.

The reverse of the coin depicts Juliette Gordon Low standing beside the early trefoil emblem of the Girl Scouts. This three-leaf symbol was one she designed herself and even patented, an emblem embodying the spirit of the Girl Scouts. The composition, in which the founder and the symbol she created are placed side by side, shows that this organization began entirely from her hands.

The Girl Scouts taught girls outdoor activities and service, friendship and challenge, instilling in them the belief that “a girl too can do anything.” This small seed that Juliette sowed grew across the generations, becoming a foothold from which countless girls today build confidence and step out into the world.

When she began this work, it was uncommon for a woman to lead a large organization. Juliette gathered help from those around her and, persuading people, raised up a movement, firmly establishing as an institution her belief in the potential of girls.

This quarter, depicting her standing beside the trefoil emblem, warmly conveys how the imagination of a single person broadened the futures of countless girls.
